The Early Dogs by Rose Baily

I recently came across a newsletter with an article by the Late Rose Baily written in the early ‘70s, extracts are below.  I think it clarifies the colours and type of some of the foundation dogs in our pedigrees.

“I think my memory stretches a good way back beyond others and I have frequently been asked about the early R.Rs – what were they like, and what colours were they.

The early dogs, Dr. McKenzies Manscross line were red wheaten, some with dark muzzles.  They were the foundation of so many of our dogs and were so close to imported stock and outstandingly successful.

Ch. Hunter of Owlsmoor was pure Manscross breeding.  They were balanced, big boned and of substance, sometimes more workmanlike than elegant especially the bitches.  At best they had wonderful proportions, elegance and lovely strong heads free from throatiness.

The Hubs were plain faced, generally a clear wheaten all over colour, though again some had dark muzzles.  Some of the bitches were a deeper wheaten.  Chevalier of Hub was a great foundation sire, and an outstanding sire of brood bitches.  Miss Hackers bitches, before the Mancross appeared were big and strong, showing both substance and tremendous quality.

International Ch. Ben Hur of Thornbury was a very light wheaten dog with a dark muzzle – sent over from S. Africa (after he had seen the standard at Crufts) by Mr Green who suggested he would make a good foundation dog to cross with Manscross bitches.

Ch Owlsmoor Glenaholm Adonis was a dark red wheaten.

Ch. Owlsmoor Sandown Hustler was another very influential sire – an imported dog who appeared quite unexpectedly in the country.  He was a gorgeous looker with a wonderful temperament – another great name in the breed.  White paws often come from Hustler who was himself a rich mid-gold with white feet.”
